Sam, Simon & Angie’s group understanding of ICT integration project.
To work together as a group and construct a relevant Wiki Space for our leaning area of outdoor & environmental education. The project will compile of at least 4 lessons that will be intended for a group of year 9 outdoor education students, who have chosen to go on the Cape-to-Cape 7 day hike with us. The project will detail the 5 formal assessment tasks, all of which will underpin principles of social constructivism. Furthermore the lessons and assessment tasks will integrate a variety of ICTs including interactive whiteboard, visual maps, compasses, Inspiration, Microsoft excel and photo story software. The Wiki Space will provide opportunity for students to check and review details of task’s, the process in which they will be completed, and have marking criteria after and during actual lessons.
ICTs justification and evidence of principles of social constructivism
Inspiration brainstorm on overhead projector – offers a chance for students to brainstorm ideas of what the already know about the topic. They can all see the process unfold on the overhead projector. The teacher should create an environment where students can work together and all answers are accepted and respected.
Microsoft excel- menu planning. The use of ICT provides an opportunity where the can organise thoughts into a readable and useable format. The students work collaboratively to come up with a menu that they are all satisfied with.
Microsoft excel- packing & weight. Again the student’s use a format where they can see and organise equipment list. The process may includes elements of problem solving as they eliminate equipment items they don’t really need and only include essentials Photo story-Here students are given the freedom to explore a new way of learning. In making a photo story, it will prompt them in remembering the learning experiences from the trip and what personnel feelings they associated with these experiences. The aim to promote more permanent memories of their learning experiences through attaching these memories to visual stimuli, i.e. - the photo story. This is a project specifically designed for the finale to the experience. It is an effective way for students to critically reflect on what they learnt from the trip, through achieving specific goals (navigation, comfort in remote setting), and overcoming personal hurdles (group dynamics, leadership).
Maps and Compasses- Even though these instruments are not relatively new technologies, they are still widely used, and provide a great opportunity for students to further their learning through practical application. This is an activity which required students to effectively work as a team.
Internet- research of flora and fauna opportunity for students to work independently to collect relevant information to share with class Interactive whiteboard- Provides stimulating visuals and supports interaction between students and content.
Leaning Area Outcomes outdoor education: Scope and sequence unit 1A. Task- Research and presentation of flora or fauna. Aspect outdoor experiences: Planning- History of area, information of environmentalarea. Aspect self and others: Working with others- communication skills, active listening.
